This is one of the most common questions we get, and it is a good one. Both systems address hard water, but they work differently and suit different situations.
Salt-Based Water Softener
A traditional water softener uses an ion-exchange process to physically remove calcium and magnesium (hardness minerals) from your water and replace them with sodium. The result is truly "soft" water — zero hardness.
Best for:
- Very hard water (above 15 grains per gallon / ~250 ppm)
- Homes with heavy scale buildup on fixtures, water heaters, and appliances
- Situations where you want the slippery, soft-water feel
Considerations: Requires salt refills (typically every 4–8 weeks), needs a drain connection, and adds a small amount of sodium to your water.
See the RKIN Water Softener.
Salt-Free Water Conditioner (OnliSoft)
A salt-free system does not remove hardness minerals. Instead, it neutralizes them so they cannot stick to surfaces and form scale. The minerals are still in the water, but they pass through your plumbing without causing buildup.
Best for:
- Moderate hard water (under 15–25 grains per gallon)
- People who want to avoid salt, sodium, and waste water
- Homes with septic systems (no brine discharge)
- Eco-conscious households — no electricity, no drain line
Considerations: You may still see some water spots when droplets dry, but they will wipe off easily since the minerals no longer cling to surfaces.
See the OnliSoft Pro (includes carbon filtration) or the OnliSoft (conditioner only).
Which Should I Choose?
If your hardness is under 15 GPG and you prefer a low-maintenance, salt-free option, the OnliSoft is an excellent choice. If your water is very hard or you want zero hardness, go with the salt-based softener. Not sure about your water hardness? Order a water test or contact us — we will help you figure it out.
