Well Water vs. City Water: How to Choose the Right Whole House System

Your water source makes a big difference in which filtration system will work best for your home. Here is what to know about each.

City (Municipal) Water

City water has already been treated by your local water utility, so it is generally free of bacteria and major contaminants. However, the treatment process leaves behind chemicals like chlorine and chloramines that affect taste, smell, and can be harsh on your skin, hair, and appliances.

Common city water issues:

  • Chlorine or chloramine taste and smell
  • Hard water / scale buildup
  • Lead from older pipes
  • PFAS and other trace chemicals

Well Water

Well water is untreated, so it can contain a wider range of issues depending on your local geology. Iron, sulfur (that rotten egg smell), manganese (brown/black staining), and bacteria are all common.

Common well water issues:

  • Iron staining (orange/rust color)
  • Sulfur / hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell)
  • Manganese (black staining)
  • Hardness
  • Bacteria (coliform, E. coli)
  • Low pH (acidic water)
