Does RKIN filter PFAS and microplastics?
Yes. RKIN reverse osmosis (RO) systems filter PFAS compounds and microplastics to levels far below what municipal treatment removes. Here's what you need to know.
PFAS ("Forever Chemicals") — PFOA, PFOS, GenX
RO membranes filter PFAS by size exclusion at 0.0001 microns (0.1 nanometers). PFAS molecules range from 0.5–1.5 nanometers — larger than the membrane pore size. This means RO membranes are highly effective at reducing PFAS concentrations in your drinking water.
RKIN systems that reduce PFAS:
- Flash Undersink RO — full RO membrane, reduces PFAS at the tap
- U1 4-in-1 Countertop Filter — RO stage reduces PFAS
- Zero Installation Purifier (ZIP) — RO membrane reduces PFAS; certified for PFAS reduction
Carbon-based systems (OnliSoft, Carbon Block): These reduce some PFAS compounds but are not considered fully effective for PFAS removal. If PFAS is your primary concern, choose an RO system.
Microplastics
Microplastic particles range from 1 micrometer (1 µm) to 5 millimeters in size. RO membranes filter at 0.0001 microns — thousands of times smaller than microplastic particles. All RKIN RO systems filter microplastics effectively.
RKIN systems that filter microplastics:
- Flash Undersink RO
- U1 4-in-1 Countertop Filter
- Zero Installation Purifier (ZIP)
Does PFAS or microplastic presence affect filter life?
No. Filter lifespan is based on water volume and sediment load, not PFAS or microplastic concentration. Your filter replacement schedule stays the same regardless of PFAS levels in your water supply.
Which system is right for my water concern?
If PFAS or microplastics are your primary concern, any RKIN RO system will address them. Reply to this conversation with your water source (city/municipal or well water) and we'll confirm the best fit for your situation.
Zero Installation Purifier: Filter Indicator Light
The ZIP filter indicator light is usage-based — it tracks water volume filtered, not time.
- Green light = filter is working normally
- Red light = filter needs replacement
The indicator resets automatically when you install a new filter. You do not need to press any buttons or manually reset it.
Why does my light turn red sooner than expected? If you filter more water than average (e.g., a large household, cooking with filtered water), the indicator will reach red before the typical 6-month mark. This is normal — the light is tracking actual usage, which is more accurate than a fixed timer.
